What to Wear: New Year’s resolutions

Question: One of my resolutions this year is to look and feel more stylish and pulled together. I want to know the trends I should try and what beauty products I can buy to immediately feel better about my look.

Answer: Start off your new year looking and feeling fabulous by trying these style-savvy tips and tricks.

1. The quickest way to learn about the latest trends is to invest a few bucks in the “style bible,” Vogue magazine. Flipping through its pages will keep you aware of what’s on trend and make your shopping trips easier. It doesn’t matter if you’re shopping at Barneys New York or Kohl’s; if you read about fashion, you’ll be able to recognize which styles, shapes, colors and cuts are current and worth taking to the fitting room.

2. Now on to clothing trends. A few styles that have become instantly popular are lace and leather. Look for a top with subtle lace embellishment, and avoid blouses that expose your undergarments. Think pretty and feminine, not racy and skin-bearing. Leather jackets, skirts and even dresses are popping up all over the place. I suggest investing in a lightweight, gray leather jacket. It will be a great transitional piece come spring.

3. Accessories are an easy way to add instant style to a basic look. A few hot-ticket items are Jeffrey Campbell shoes and costume jewelry with a bit of bedazzle. Jeffrey Campbell shoes are fun, trendy and very identifiable. The shoes are the same price point as Steve Madden but just a tad more stylish.

Glitzy costume jewelry is not limited to eveningwear anymore. Banana Republic has loads of sparkly jewels that will add a fashionable flair to your look.

4. Switching up a few of your staple beauty products also will make you feel more refreshed and fashionable this year. Trying a new perfume and nail color may seem like subtle changes, but they will not go unnoticed. I recommend metallic polishes and Trish McEvoy fragrances.
