Its getting chilly out, and there is nothing like a hot, creamy latte on a chilly morning! Check out the hautest coffee shops in LA.
Coffee is an important beverage in urban Los Angeles; it keeps local residents awake at the wheel and their feet on the gas pedal. Whether you live in the area or you’re just passing through, make some time to sit down at one of these shops for a haute cup of coffee.
#1 Caffe Primo
Caffe Primo, literally meaning “first in class”, aims to offer a sophisticated yet down to earth café experience in the heart of Los Angeles. Their coffee is hand selected and roasted in-house to provide customers with the freshest cup of coffee possible. Their homemade gelato, a favorite amongst local patrons, is made fresh every day by restaurant cofounder Tony Riviera. All their edible sensations are paired with the charming atmosphere of the café. They strive to offer patrons an indoor-outdoor feel with outside seating, many open windows and lots of glass paneling. But don’t fret about weather, the outdoor tables are surrounded by tall heat lamps to counter those chilly desert nights. Caffe Primo is a great spot for breakfast, lunch, dinner or just coffee.
#2 Urth Caffe
Urth Caffe is a staple for Los Angeles natives with casual atmosphere and organic fare. Although they have four locations, the Urth Caffe in Beverly Hills is our favorite. All locations carry organic coffees, teas, and juices (and their juice bar is quite extensive). Try a blend of beet, ginger, and carrot juice to get your morning going. Their sandwiches and salads are all freshly made and the ingredients, like the drinks, are organic. Breakfast is usually a busy time of day at the café with plates full of poached eggs and tables covered in cups of espresso. Don’t let the crows intimidate you though; the line moves quickly and a server will take your order before you even reach the cash register.
#3 Lamill Coffee Boutique
Stop by Lamill for a haute cup of coffee. The boutique is located in Los Angeles’ trendy Silver Lake area and offers patrons a highly sophisticated coffee drinking experience. Lamill goes beyond the usual choices of coffee preparation and offers methods such as French press and hand drip coffees that go through crystal filters. And, their beans come from exotic places like Ethiopia, Kenya, and Guatemala.
#4 Intelligentsia
This coffee shop specializes in both coffee and tea and their selection is incredible. They have multiple locations in California and all their roasting and brewing is done on site. They offer coffee workshops and tours of their factory so that customers can make confident and informed coffee purchases. The staff is very friendly and can answer any questions you may have about their products and the business itself. Decaf drinkers need not worry at this joint; special, flavorful blends of decaf coffee are served here.
#5 Coffee Commissary
The Coffee Commissary is a true coffee shop indeed. They offer delicious little munchies along with a large selection of coffees, teas, and chai. Whole wheat croissants are a specialty of theirs. Make sure to try their house-made granola and yogurt parfait – it goes great with a creamy ice coffee. Their large patio area is perfect for everybody, equipped with lots of tables and large umbrellas to block out the sun if necessary. Also, they have free wifi, which is perfect for anybody who wants to get some work done on their computer while sipping on a cappuccino.

More than 200 guests, who had travelled from all over the world for the occasion – among them artist Daphne Guinness, gallery owner Alexander Dellal and shoe designer Christian Louboutin – were keen to discover the collection that has become a glamorous fixture on the Rock. An exclusive evening where total chic reigned supreme.

For its stage début, Roger Dubuis could not conceive any better place than the one that had inspired the creation of his Monégasque collection, the cradle of glamour: Monte Carlo. The style of the sports convertibles, the rustle of silk evening dresses, the lapping of the Mediterranean waves, the elegance… a murmur, almost musical, that resonates with the movements, with Haute Horlogerie and the multiple operations of craftsmanship that bears the name of Roger Dubuis. So it was as if swept away into another age, mingling splendour, elegance and sparkle, that brought together nearly 200 guests on the Mediterranean rock.
All the celebrities present, gathered specially from all four corners of the world, had the chance to discover the new line and celebrate in the stylish ambience of Monte Carlo. While the event was unique, the decor was in perfect harmony with the spirit of the collection. Different epochs and references came together in a timelessly festive celebration. A blend of Monaco magic and craftsmanship made in Switzerland.

The evening took place at the Hotel de Paris, classified as a historic monument since the end of the 19th century. Among the many celebrities present, Daphne, Alexander Dellal and Christian Louboutin graced the red carpet as they arrived. Received by Mr. Georges Kern, CEO of Roger Dubuis, the stars were invited to sample the pleasures of the terrace, decorated with gaming tables, for a cocktail party in keeping with the style of the top casinos. Afterwards, they gathered round a table laid with refinement beneath the gilded splendour of the Empire Room for a prestige dinner. The expression «European art of living» took on its full significance as the reception progressed, and to conclude the evening, the guests were regaled with a private concert by Mr. Curtis Stigers, organised exclusively for Roger Dubuis.

Roger Dubuis left a lasting impression on those present, who let themselves be carried away by the spell of the moment. During this unforgettable evening, the Genevan watchmaker once more demonstrated his creativity, modernity and ability to surprise. Pervaded with the ambience of those cosy salons wreathed in cigar smoke and hinting at the thrills of the gaming table, an artistic reflection of an epoch in search of the art of living, the Monégasque collection imposed its style at first glance. Through its personality, strength of character and perfectly controlled vigour, the collection asserts its charisma.

All the models in the collection are equipped with Roger Dubuis mechanical movements, as exemplified by the outstanding latest-generation, high-performance RD680 chronograph movement, which is precise, reliable and tough. After this fabulous launch, the line will shortly be available from the most celebrated retailers on the planet: specialist zones dedicated to conveying the fiery, ultra-creative, high-tech image of Roger Dubuis.

It’s well known that Steve McQueen wore a Rolex Submariner; not so well known is that he actually owned two of them. The well-documented example, a ref. #5512, sold at Antiquorum in 2009 for $234,000. Now California’s Fourtané has turned up the other, an almost identical ref. #5113. They have not disclosed the price but we expect they’ll be looking to realize about the same as the Antiquorum sale. Turns out McQueen gave the second Sub to his longtime friend and stunt driver Bud Ekins, who ran a Triumph dealership in California.
McQueen was negotiating a motorcycle purchase while being advised by Ekins, and offered to do the deal the man threw in the Submariner. One week later the actor gave the watch to Ekins help coaching him on motorcycle racing and acquisitions. Ekins, a celebrity in his own right, wore the watch every day for 22 years side by side with McQueen. The watch is currently on display at Fourtane’s flagship store on Ocean Ave in downtown Carmel-by-the-Sea, CA – but we bet not for long. Meanwhile, check out the Submariners for sale on James.
Former FP Journe watchmaker Ludovic Ballouard makes a pretty serious timepiece in the Upside Down watch, the first ticker under his eponymous new brand. The watch sells for over $50,000, and yet he decided to strap the thing to the bottom of a helicopter and sends it up to about 3000 feet. Why? We’re not too sure. But he did it, and he flimed it, and that’s what you can see above.
